A Stolen Celebration: The Harvest Festival (Dožínky).
In the early 1950s, the festival became a tool for ideological control of rural culture. This traditional celebration, which was once associated with community cohesion and the spiritual symbolism of the end of the harvest, acquired an entirely new political meaning after 1948. The Communist regime transformed the festival into a carefully staged socialist spectacle, celebrating collective labour, peace and the fulfilment of state plans. The harvest was presented as a victory for society as a whole, with the dožínky serving as an optimistic culmination.
