09 TRANSPORTING THE MACIHNES

The main Russian strikes on Ukraine were carried out in February 2022 in the direction of the city of Kharkiv, then from Crimea to Zaporozhye, and also from Belarus towards Kyiv and the Chernihiv region, where significant damage was caused, among other things, to agricultural enterprises.

Seeder

The Amazone D9 4000 Super, made in Germany, was purchased by the agricultural company Agromino (village Lukashivka) in 2019. In early March 2022, it became a target of vandalism by invading troops, who also killed the remaining livestock after seizing the farm. The seeder was defaced by fire after the soldiers set fire to the shelter where it was parked. The agronomist who procured the machine for the farm was deployed in the fighting for Bakhmut. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Tractor

The tractor, manufactured at the Minsk Tractor Plant in 2017, was damaged during air raids on the Krasne farm between 15 and 20 March 2022, when eight bombs were dropped on the farm. The resulting fire engulfed the agricultural equipment garages, causing significant damage. During the air raid, a Belarus 1523 tractor was hit and completely burned. Wire reinforcement from the tyres is still visible on the tractor's discs, and shrapnel holes can be seen in the wreckage, particularly in the exhaust.

Combine harvester

Also damaged was a John Deere 9700 STS combine harvester, manufactured in 2008 and purchased as a second-hand machine for Krasne farm in 2021. After the conflict broke out, farmers attempted to transport the combine inland. However, the machine was hit by shrapnel from an artillery shell and destroyed by fire. The intense heat caused the glass in the cab to melt.

Route

After several months of negotiations, the machines were transported to the Czech Republic with the assistance of the Czech Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since the machines were immobile, cranes were used for loading and unloading, and they were transported on a lorry. Volunteers, the Rotary Club Pardubice and ČD Cargo assisted with the transport of the machines.

The machines on display come from farms in the villages of Krasne and Lukashivka, located in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine. This region, encompassing 31,865 km²,  is the second-largest self-governing area in the country and is situated in the north of Ukraine, bordering Russia and Belarus. Russian invasion troops withdrew from the area in late March and early April 2022. In 2023, the National Museum of Agriculture acquired for its collections the wreckage of three agricultural machines that were destroyed at the onset of the war.
